Seventeenth Century, French Engraving of the Annunciation by Pierre Landry

This seventeenth century engraving of the Annunciation has in Latin, "Verbum caro factum est et habitavit in- nobis ioan." Translated, this means, "The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us."

Pierre Landry was a French engraver and publisher.

This engraving depicts Gabriel bringing the Virgin Mary flowers (lilies) and telling her she will conceive "The Son of the Most High G-d." The addition of the flowers was popular as early as the fourteenth century. There is a small putto at Gabriel's feet and numerous putti surrounding the Holy Spirit above Gabriel and the Virgin.

This engraving on laid paper has, in the past, been mounted to sturdier card stock.

Please note folding to the edges of the engraving, in particular but not limited to the lower right corner and upper left as well as discoloration to the edges and face of the engraving.

Dimensions are 12,5 cm x 7 cm.
