This extremely rare tape de bouche or mouthpiece/muzzle tap from the French submarine Sybille was used to cover the mouth of weapons as protection against the elements. If the submarine had no weapons, sometimes a tape de bouche was only a symbolic muzzle tap.

The Sybille was a Diane class submarine that operated on the Allied side until 1940 when she became part of the collaborationist side of Vichy, France. With construction beginning in 1931 by Chantiers Worms le Trait of Rouen, France, her keel was laid down at this time, and the submarine was launched on 28 January 1933.
The Sybille went missing on 8 November 1942 when she disappeared during the Allied invasion of North Africa with her entire crew of 41, never to be heard from again.
