This early (circa 17th century) religious medallion is from France, but its provenance is unknown. It is notable to mention that Saint Catherine is considered one of the 14 "Holy Helpers" and is venerated in Germany and Hungary. The medallion depicts Saint Catherine of Alexandria with crown and sword. The carved mother of pearl has traces of polychrome and measures 2.5" x 2.75" on the front. The medallion has a slight curvature to it, and the reverse is papered with a hook for hanging.
*****Condition: Please note that the medallion has extensive wear in the form of chips, cracks, scratches, and loss to the polychrome. Please examine the photos carefully and do let me know if you need more as I'll be happy to oblige. The third and eighth photos show the most visible damage (cracks and chips) as cited above. Please also examine the face of the figure for damage. I don't believe any visible cracks are structural. Finally, because the medallion is hand-carved, there will be inconsistencies in depth and texture.
