This early (circa 17th century) religious medallion is from France, but its provenance is unknown. The hand-carved carved mother of pearl has traces of polychrome and measures 2 ⅜" x 2 ⅝" on the front. The medallion has a slight curvature to it, and the reverse is papered with a hook for hanging.
I was inclined to say this is Saint Lucy because of the dagger, but she is almost always depicted with a tray of her gouged out eyes so I do not believe this to be her.
*****Condition: Please note that the medallion has extensive wear in the form of chips, cracks, scratches, and loss to the polychrome. Please examine the photos carefully and do let me know if you need more as I'll be happy to oblige. The fourth photo in particular shows a chip. The sixth photo shows a curious area of bubble-like texture. The ninth photo shows what could be cracks in the face. They appear to be surface cracks only and do not affect the structure of the medallion. Finally, because the medallion is hand-carved, there will be inconsistencies in depth and texture.
