This brass vesta/match safe is from France, circa early 1900s, and possibly trench art from WWI. It is comprised of brass and has two etched shells, a larger whelk on the cover of the safe and a smaller scallop on the upper portion of the safe, above the hinge.
Vesta is the Roman goddess associated with the home and hearth, and vesta is the more European of the two monikers. Match safes/vestas were created before the advent of safety matches since matches prior to this could strike on any surface. Match safes/vestas also keep the matches dry in the event of damp conditions.
The safe measures 2 ¾" x 1.5" at its widest. Depth is ⅝". The patina of the safe has darkening and scratches. The interior is discolored, and the match strike has been used. Please examine the photos carefully and do let me know if you need more as I'll be happy to oblige.
