Framed Mourning Portrait with Needlework and Gimp Trim, from France

$145.00

This framed mourning portrait from France contains a carte de visite of a young woman with exquisite needlework and gimp trim surrounding the portrait. There is also a small looping embellishment, which may be metal, peeking out behind the gimp. The oval frame is gold-painted wood with decorative carving around the edge. The reverse of the frame has an embossed brown backing. Clearly, a lot of thought went into creating such a memorial.

The carte de visite is from the photographer Henry of Saintes, in western France. The framing is by Bentejac in the heart of Tourny (Cours de Tourny), the Bordeaux region of France.

The piece measures 6 ¾" x 4 ¾". The edge measures ½".

*****Condition: Please note the frame has extensive wear. Please examine the photos and do let me know if you need more as I'll be happy to oblige. The first six photos show wear to the wood face of the frame, and the last two show wear to the edge. The brown backing shown in the eighth photo does have wear, and the clips holding the backing in place have dug into the edges, which has caused rubs and bare spots. Finally, there is no hook by which to hang the frame so a tabletop easel would be the most suitable to display this piece without altering it.

Thank you for looking.
