Antique, French cardboard advertisement for Le Nil cigarette rolling papers. The design was created by the Italian artist Leonetto Cappiello. Le Nil began as J.B. (Joseph Bardou) in 1849. The company was then renamed JOB. During the 1870s, the papers were regularly shipped to Egypt and were renamed Le Nil after the Nile River. The motifs of palm trees, elephant and pyramids were also used and aligned with the brand. This advertisement was printed by Bernard Sirven who founded a printing press in Toulouse. He is best known for Art Nouveau style pieces. "B Serven, imp. edit. Toulouse Paris" is in the lower right corner. The piece measures 21 cm x 15 cm.
While the original advertisement held a packet of Le Nil cigarette papers, this is no longer the case; however, I'm including a pack of vintage Le Nil papers. Please note that they do not have the elastic to thread through the slots on the advertisement.
*****Condition: Please note this cardboard advertisement has significant wear. Please examine the photos carefully and do let me know if you need more as I'll be happy to oblige.
