Rare, Pre-Cinema, Early Animation Phenakisticope Disc, Circa 1830s, France

$88.00

This rare, hand-colored phenakistoscope disc from France measures 6 ¾" across and is circa 1830s. It is one of the earliest forms of animation and pre-dates cinema. This disc could possibly be attributed to Alphonse Giroux.

Please note that there is no slotted disc accompanying this disc nor is there a handle so these items would have to be purchased separately. Since they are rare and difficult to find, one can make a slotted disc if one wishes to use this. Otherwise, it is quite suitable for display/framing.

*****Condition: Please note that there is foxing/discoloration, overall general wear, and what look to be indents (almost like pin pricks) in the last photo. Please examine the photos carefully and do let me know if you need more as I'll be happy to oblige.

From https://www.historyofinformation.com/detail.php?id=3675: In 1832 Belgian physicist Joseph Antoine Ferdinand Plateau (Joseph Plateau) of Brussels became first person to demonstrate the illusion of a moving image. Plateau's device, which he called the phenakistoscope ("spindle viewer"), used the persistence of motion principle to create an illusion of motion. It consisted of two disks, one with small equidistant radial windows, through which the viewer could look, and another containing a sequence of images drawn around the disk in concentric circles. When viewed in a mirror through the first disk's slots, the pictures on the second disk appeared to move. The synchronization of the windows and the images created an animated effect. Also in 1832, Viennese mathematician and inventor Simon von Stampfer invented a similar device, which he called a stroboscope.
