This Russian lacquer brooch has "Rublevo," an area of Moscow, written on the edge. The brooch is 1 ⅞" across with a C clasp on back and depicts a firebird and golden apples or possibly pearls (which it throws to the poor) from the Slavic fairytale.
Here is the story of "The Firebird": http://www.artrusse.ca/fairytales/firebird.htm
It is believed that the firebird's feathers are magic, and the appearance of the firebird symbolizes a difficult task or journey.
I am not certain of the age of this brooch but the C clasp possibly points to an older provenance.
