This marble ink blotter is more than likely French, in the Empire style, and from the early 1800s with a rosette handle and what appear to be stylized acanthus or anthemion leaves on either side. The handle unscrews to remove and replace the blotter paper that fits snugly against a felt pad that is against the bottom wood portion of the blotter.
This piece is substantial, weighing 2 pounds and 6.7 ounces. The very top of the blotter measures approximately 6.25" x 2.50". The handle is approximately 2" in height. The blotter, measured on its edges, is approximately 7" x 3 ⅛".
Please examine the fifth photo carefully. It is a compilation of six photos showing the chips to the marble. While these are not glaring and are probably in keeping with this object's age and usage, they are there nonetheless. If you require more photographs, do let me know, and I'll be happy to oblige.
