Primitive Black Doll

Sorry, this item has sold.

This 12" primitive black doll is vintage, but I'm not sure of her age. The buttons with which her clothing is adorned are plastic so this would put the doll no earlier than the 1930s. I also believe this doll to be later than the 1940s as she is not a "racialized" black doll; that is, she does not have the characteristics of inferiority and marginalization that saturated the toy and advertising markets, particularly in the 1920s. Rather, the doll appears to have been lovingly and carefully made.

Thank you to http://www.diaspora.illinois.edu/RacializedBlackDollsApps1-3.pdf for an interesting article.

The scarf around the doll's shoulders looks to be a hankie with crocheted red, white and blue trim and an embroidered triangularly folded swatch of white eyelet. The pantaloons are a bit discolored but have no rips, tears or holes, and the skirt and blouse are in good condition with no fading, rips, tears or holes. The hair appears to be yarn and the eyes are painted white dots.

Thank you for looking.
