This string holder is definitely vintage. It could very well be antique, but since there is no provenance, I cannot be certain. String holders were used before the invention of scotch tape and paperclips and were popular in the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, right around WWI.
The piece is made from painted fabric. I believe the ruffle around the dog's face, which also forms part of the back of the piece, is reinforced with cardboard. There is a ball of string in the back with stuffed tissue paper to prevent the string from falling out and also to give the face fullness. There is a string at the top from which to hang the piece.
The piece measures 6 1//8" across the back.
