This set of celluloid, double six dominoes contains 28 tiles and the original game instructions. The dominoes have wear, as seen in the last photo. They also exhibit the characteristic celluloid odor when rubbed vigorously with the fingers.
The Embossing Company was established in 1870 by brothers John Wesley, Charles, and Isaiah Hyatt. John Wesley is known for inventing the celluloid billiard ball, and his materials were used in early Embossing Company dominoes. Thank you to http://www.oldwoodtoys.com/the_embossing_company.htm for the information on this company and its founders.
I am dating this set as being circa early to mid 1940s, based on what I've read in researching this company's dominoes and also based on the patriotic eagles depicted on the box.
I did not have room to show the bottom of the box, which exhibits some wear but nothing that prevents it from being a sturdy container to hold the set. If you'd like to see this photo, please let me know, and I'll be happy to oblige.
