This is etching is done on what is known as a fungal conk. A conk appearing on a tree indicates that the tree is decaying. This conk depicts a pastoral scene of a cow in a field with a fence in the background. "Vermont" is also etched in the lower right corner of the piece.
The back of the fungus shows rings, which can be used to date the age of the fungus much like tree rings.
This piece was created by D. Alderman of Middlesex, Vermont in 1991, as evidenced by the etching on the back of the conk.
The conk is free standing and measures approximately 6.50" at its widest and 4.50" in height.
Please note the surface wear in the form of scratches and rubs, as seen in the photos. Care must be taken as this is easily scratched, which makes it a fine medium for etchers.
