This vintage figural animal pincushion complete with pins is a rarity and is more than likely circa early 1900s. I believe the body to be muslin or perhaps linen with silk overlay. It was suggested that this may be from the workshop of Eleanor Beard.
Please note that the silk has deteriorated in places and is either torn or missing. Also, please examine the rudimentary stitching on the underside in photo five, maybe the result of a later repair, and note the ornamental stitching on the body and feet is loose in places with two stitches missing on one back rear foot. Finally, the elephant leans and rests on his trunk, but if gently positioned, he will stand properly.
This pincushion should not be used for its original purpose as this would cause further deterioration. Also, it should be kept away from sunlight and temperature extremes.
The piece measures 6" from the back feet to the tip/end of the trunk and is approximately 3" at its widest point.
Please don't hesitate to ask me for more photographs as I'll be happy to oblige. Your pincushion will be sent via Priority Mail and fully insured.
