I believe this box to be circa late 1800s, perhaps early 1900s. The two silk handkerchiefs each have the year 1933 on them. One is still in its cellophane wrapper, and both, as well as the other handkerchiefs, have brown climate stains.
The box appears to be made of a lightweight wood with decoupage. Please note the split in the decoupage, as shown in the fourth photo. This is the most obvious. There is also a small split in the decoupage, approximately 3/4", on the front right side toward the base. There is rippling on the surface of the decoupage, probably owing to age, and the underside of the box (See seventh photo, please.) has staining and a horizontal split that is also evident in the interior of the box when the tissue paper liner is removed.
There are metal embellishments to the top of the box, a metal closure, and metal feet.
The decoupage has some staining, the most visible on the face of the woman to the right of her nose when viewing the box straight on. There are other age-related stains to the decoupage. The interior of the box is lined in pink silk.
There are four linen and cotton handkerchiefs with decorative needlework, and there are the two silk handkerchiefs as aforementioned.
Measurements of the base of the box are 8 1/2" x 6" with a 1 1/4" depth. The curved lid measures 8" x 5 1/4.
The interior of the box and handkerchiefs have an odor that can best be described as being "old." I would not characterize it as musty nor is there any odor of smoke.
Do let me know if you'd like more photos as I'll be happy to oblige.
The box is fragile and will be securely wrapped to ensure safe shipping.

Shipped very quickly. Hankies were a real bonus. They soaked from dingy yellow/light brown to pristine white.
