This bronze, French medal commemorating The Great War (WWI) is 1.25" in diameter and suspended from a white ribbon with five red stripes. The length of the medal and ribbon together is 3 ¾" and 3 ¼" when pinned.
The medal was issued in 1920 to award military personnel who served during the war and also to award civilians who helped the war effort.
The front of the medal depicts a sword-holding, Adrian helmet- wearing Marianne, who first appeared as a symbol of the French values of liberty, equality and fraternity during the French Revolution.
The reverse of the medal is inscribed "Republique Française Grande Guerre 1914-1918."
The maker's mark is that of J. Gatty and appears on the back toward the bottom edge of the medal.
Please note the considerable wear to the back of the medal and some soiling/discoloration to the ribbon. Do let me know if you would like more photos as I'll be more than happy to oblige.
